For some reason, I found this early talkie interesting despite the stilted dialog, poor acting, and lack of retakes.

Subject: Crime of passion
Devoted husband, loyal son, faithless wife and murder. I share uploader Moongleam's opinion of this dated little melodrama. It has poorly acted stilted dialog, and I'll add two plot elements stretch credulity beyond the breaking point. Nevertheless it kept me hanging on to see what happens next. Stars Eddie Nugent, veteran actor Robert Elliott and silent film star Priscilla Dean, supported by Ann Christy, Robert Ellis and George Chesebro.

The direction is adequate and so are the production values, though you probably wouldn't want the set designer to be your interior decorator. Regardless of its flaws, "Behind Stone Walls" is a fast-moving, okay time passer.

The title card and credits are missing. Otherwise the print is complete and in reasonable shape. There are a few missing-frame dropouts of no consequence.

CAST NOTES: Priscilla Dean was one of many silent stars whose careers were ended by the arrival of sound. Between 1912 and 1932 she appeared in 91 features and comedy shorts, only five of which were sound productions. She can be seen here at IA in "Outside the Law" and "Klondike," her last film. Priscilla Dean outlived her career by many years. She died in 1987 at the age of 91.

In 1937 Eddie Nugent (a.k.a. Edward J Nugent) reversed the trend by leaving Hollywood to become a successful Broadway actor. Later he again switched careers and became a producer, writer and director for ABC Television. He also was long-lived, dying in 1995 at the age of 90. A number of his films are here at IA, which I was too lazy to hunt down.
